Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition that affects individuals across all age groups.

ADHD influences attention, impulsivity, memory, and other cognitive functions. While often identified in childhood, many adults continue to experience ADHD symptoms or receive a diagnosis later in life.

ADHD Statistics:

  • Approximately 11% of children and 4.4% of adults in the United States are diagnosed with ADHD.
  • Over 8 million adults are affected by ADHD, with many remaining unaware of their condition.
  • Less than 20% of adults with ADHD are aware they have it, and only about 25% of those receive treatment.

Types of ADHD:

  1. Primarily Inattentive ADHD: Characterized by challenges in maintaining attention, forgetfulness, and disorganization. Individuals may struggle to complete tasks, follow instructions, and stay focused, without exhibiting hyperactive behaviors.
  2. Primarily Hyperactive/Impulsive ADHD: Marked by excessive fidgeting, incessant talking, interrupting others, and engaging in impulsive actions. Individuals may find it difficult to remain seated, wait their turn, or control impulses, without significant inattention.
  3. Combined Type ADHD: The most common form, presenting a combination of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

Diagnosing ADHD in women can be complex due to societal expectations to manage multiple roles simultaneously, which may mask or exacerbate symptoms.
